Up till now he's been so rigid, turning away from every opportunity to compromise, that I felt that he had committed himself to crushing the opposition. And the opposition have also refused to back down, issuing stronger and stronger statements. With both sides doubling down, and then doubling their bets again, I wonder if either side can now back away. If Khamenei tells the basij and the Revolutionary Guard to be less violent, then how will he deal with the protests planned for this Thursday. With only a little violence? Just enough to get caught on video, but not enough to scare people off the streets? Or is Khamenei looking for a way out... This seems to signal a huge change for Khamenei.
