T he following picture was posted to Twitter today, purportedly taken at Tehran University (though we can’t confirm this), showing the picture of Ayatollah Khamenei, the so-called Supreme Leader of Iran with green paint splattered on it, next to the untarnished picture of his predecessor, Ayatollah Khomeini. If this picture is authentic it is very telling of the situation in Iran, where just prior to last years’ rigged presidential election, public displays like this were very taboo and virtually unheard of.

July 9 in Iran marks the 11th anniversary of the student uprisings in Tehran, that started at Tehran University, and led to a week of widespread protests in Tehran and a crackdown by the government that left at least 4 people dead and many more injured and/or missing.

There are already rumblings of possible protests at Iranian universities for this July 9th circulating on the web.
