EA WorldView: Wikileaks Iran Special: US Diplomats Assess the Green Movement and the Political Situation (January 2010)

EA WorldView | December 3, 2010 By Dr. Scott Lucas “The GPO [Green Movement] has a strong ‘brand’ – green, freedom, peace signs, silent marches, stolen election and martyrs like Neda Agha Soltani. But like the regime that seeks to crush it, the GPO is not monolithic. To characterize the GPO’s active core as now [...]

After Israeli Visit, a Diplomatic Sprint on Iran

BERLIN, May 16 (Reuters) – Iran should engage with the United States and negotiate over its nuclear programme, Mohamed ElBaradei, chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said in a magazine interview released on Saturday.

U.S. President Barack Obama is actively seeking to engage Iran on a series of issues, from its nuclear programme to Afghanistan.

“I advise my Iranian negotiating partners: grasp the hand that Obama is extending to you,” ElBaradei told Germany’s Der Spiegel magazine.

US firms allowed to invest in Iran oil

There is no barrier for the presence of foreign companies in the Iranian oil industry, says the head of National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).

“The Islamic Republic has always welcomed the investment by all foreign companies in Iranian oil, gas and petrochemical projects, including US firms,” Seyfollah Jashnsaaz said Tuesday.

He said there would be no legal obstacle if US firms want to negotiate over their investment in the Iranian oil industry, adding that their return would benefit all parties.

Despite U.S. Outreach, Syria Affirms Iran Ties

U.S. officials ought not to have been surprised by the smiling solidarity between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iranian President Mahmoud Amadinejad in Damascus on Tuesday — but they may, nonetheless, have been disappointed. Sure, Iran is Syria’s closest ally, and the two countries form the core of what’s sometimes called the “Rejectionist Crescent” — the arc of countries and groups from Tehran to Gaza that stand against American and Israeli power — but the Obama Administration hopes to change that.

Obama Abandons ‘Regime Change,’ Iran Must Respond, Kerry Says

By Viola Gienger

May 6 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. has abandoned calls for “regime change” in Iran under President Barack Obama and expects a response to its diplomatic outreach, Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry said.

“That is not the current policy of this new administration, and it is important for Iran to understand that,” Kerry said during a panel hearing in Washington today. “Just as we abandon calls for regime change in Tehran and recognize the legitimate Iranian role in the region, Iran’s leaders need to moderate their behavior.”

Gates seeking to reassure Gulf on outreach to Iran

CAIRO (AP) — The top U.S. military official cautioned Monday that the Obama administration’s quest to bolster relations with Tehran most likely will be met at first by “a closed fist.”

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is on a delicate mission to soothe concerns from Mideast allies about American efforts to open diplomatic relations with Iran.

Gates arrived in Cairo on the first leg of a Mideast tour that will include Saudi Arabia. He said part of his mission this week will be to assure the Saudis, particularly, that any U.S. gesture toward Tehran will be for the purpose of improving security throughout the region.

Hostage Diplomacy: Roxana Saberi and the Three Jailed Iranian Diplomats

In response to a piece in which I thoroughly criticized the Iranian Intelligence regarding the arrest of American-Iranian journalist Roxana Saberi, I was contacted by an Iranian diplomat who asked, me; if it’s all about human rights, why isn’t anybody talking about the three Iranian diplomats who have been taken hostage by the U.S. forces in Iraq since 2007?

Obama’s back door to Iran ties

Obama officials are playing cat-and-mouse these days with Iran’s envoys.

The new administration is eager to catch a meeting in any international forum that might lead to one-on-one talks. Issues range from Iran’s nuclear program to an American journalist charged by Iran with spying.

If US diplomats do snag a secret negotiation, they’d be smart to start with the one issue in which Iran and America share a strong common interest: Afghanistan.

Iran Feature: Former Detainee Sarah Shourd “The Plight of Iranians and 3 Decades of US Foreign Policy”

The incredible thing for me was that so many Iranians worldwide took the time to care about us despite the thousands of other political prisoners they have to worry about. “I’m an Iranian boy ashamed for what our government did to three American hikers,” another message on Facebook says. “I want you to know Iranian people are with you and against their own government. Iran’s regime is not chosen by Iranian people. They kill and torture us and we are all in a very big prison named Iran.”
