Eyewitness Account of the Conditions in Evin and How Amir Javadifar Died
When we arrived, we were body searched and were beaten again at the court yard of the precinct. First they put us in a cage and insulted us in obscene language. Police officers in the precinct were not in charge. Plain clothes forces were beating us with baton through the bars and were laughing at us. The cage was small and we could not move. Then we were taken to another part of the precinct and from there they took us to the basement. We had to keep our heads low during the movements while they were beating us at the back of our heads. Once in the basement, our Ids were taken.”
Son of leading scientist dies in jail as fears grow over fate of Iran’s political prisoners
Mohsen Rouholamini and Amir Javadifar died in Tehran’s Evin prison after being arrested at a demonstration this month. Rouholamini, the son of a prominent Iranian scientist close to the country’s political elite, died from meningitis after injuries believed to have been inflicted by his jailers went untreated.
The deaths prompted fears of a meningitis outbreak in Evin and other overcrowded detention centres where opposition figures, journalists and students are kept following last month’s disputed election. News of the deaths coincided with reports of injuries to other detainees.

Ayatollah Hashim Hashim-Zadeh Hareesi – a member of the Assembly of Experts – said today that people had started to distrust the system. He explained that whatever had happened after the election had caused people to become suspicious and that the government needed to take strides to restore people’s trust otherwise, distrust could result in further more severe problems.
