Thirty-six army officers arrested in Iran over protest plan
The Iranian army has arrested 36 officers who planned to attend last week’s Friday prayer sermon by former president Hashemi Rafsanjani in their military uniforms as an act of political defiance, according to Farsi-language websites.
The officers intended the gesture to show solidarity with the demonstrations against last month’s presidential election result, which was won by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but which has been clouded by allegations of mass fraud.
Peres won’t rule out “other options” against Iran

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Israeli President Shimon Peres said on Wednesday other options remained open if U.S. diplomatic engagement with Iran failed to halt its nuclear program.
“Engagement is an attempt to achieve a goal. If this attempt will succeed, OK, but we don’t have to cross out any other options,” Peres said in a speech to Jewish leaders and diplomats in New York.
Najjar: Iran set to help promote Venezuela’s defense capabilities
Tehran, April 30, IRNA – Iran’s Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar said Iran was ready to help promote defense capabilities and deterrence power of Venezuela in the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries.
He made the remarks in a meeting with the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez in Caracas during his three-day visit to the country.
Chavez, for his part, said that Bolivarian Revolution shared many commonalities with Islamic Revolution.
He said such commonalities have further consolidated ties between the two countries.

The Israeli military is preparing itself to launch a massive aerial assault on Iran’s nuclear facilities within days of being given the go-ahead by its new government.
Among the steps taken to ready Israeli forces for what would be a risky raid requiring pinpoint aerial strikes are the acquisition of three Airborne Warning and Control (AWAC) aircraft and regional missions to simulate the attack.

Russia says not selling missile system to Iran
MOSCOW (Reuters) – Russia has not supplied Iran its advanced S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems, an official in Russia’s state arms export service was quoted as saying on Wednesday.
“Nothing is happening. There are no deliveries,” Interfax news agency quoted Alexander Fomin, first deputy director of Russia’s Federal Military and Technical Cooperation Service, as saying at an arms fair in Rio de Janeiro.
